Lecture Title: "Revealing the Invisible Parthenon: The Hidden Classical Sculpture"
Astonishingly, one third of the Parthenon sculptural program is composed of ninety-two metopes, great blocks of white marble above the columns on each side of the ancient temple. Sadly, their intentional destruction in the 6th century challenges our attempts to understand or represent their compositions. Dr. Katherine A. Schwab combined her archaeological training and artistic skill to revive the lost technique of archaeological drawing, through which she discovered a means to recover figural compositions in these ghostly echoes of mythological battles that once dominated the exterior of the Parthenon, the most famous temple of ancient Greece.
Speaker: Dr. Katherine A. Schwab, Professor of Art History at Fairfield University, is an authority on the metopes in the Parthenon sculptural program. Her study of the marble metopes has led to a new understanding of the original appearance of these badly damaged compositions in which she developed a new technique in drawing the surface. Scans of her drawings are part of the permanent installation in the Acropolis Museum. Additionally, Dr. Schwab made a film on the hairstyles worn by the renowned Caryatids in 2009 and in the fall of 2015 she co-curated an exhibition, Hair in the Classical World, at the Bellarmine Museum of Art, Fairfield University.
