Speaker: Melinda McCurdy

In the last two decades of his career, Thomas Gainsborough depicted a mother, sometimes a father, and children outside the door of a rural cottage in a number of works, known as the "Cottage Door" paintings.
This talk will explore the theme of rustic family life in Gainsborough's art through his "Cottage Door" paintings - what it meant for him to treat his humble subject in such a monumental fashion, and how he made use of contemporary aesthetic philosophy, and the dazzling power of his own brushwork, to pull his viewers' heartstrings.
Melinda McCurdy is the associate curator of British Art at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens. She manages the Huntingon's works on paper exhibitions, and is part of the curatorial team responsible for the installation of the permanent collection in the former home of Henry and Arabella Huntington.
