Portrait of a Man, Hans Memling.

Join Executive Director John Wilson and fellow Friends of the Timken for an exciting day trip to explore historic Pasadena and the Norton Simon Museum.

Our first stop will be downtown Pasadena where you will have the opportunity to shop, visit local galleries and eat lunch at one of the area’s many lovely restaurants. After that, we will take you to the Norton Simon Museum to view the museum’s extraordinary permanent collection as well as the special treat of Hans Memling's enigmatic Portrait of a Man, on temporary loan from New York’s Frick Collection.

The world‐renowned Norton Simon Museum displays one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled. Over a 30‐year period, the 20th‐century industrialist Norton Simon amassed an extensive collection of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century and a stellar collection of South and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years.

In addition to the Norton Simon’s permanent collection, Memling’s exquisite portrait of an unknown man displays the artist’s brilliance as one of the most formative early Netherlandish painters. This painting from the mid‐1470s, will be showcased alongside the Norton Simon’s own religious panel by Memling, Christ Giving His Blessing, from around 1478. Both paintings demonstrate his indebtedness to Rogier van der Weyden, as well as his awareness of a long line of counterparts. Most notable for Timken patrons is Memling’s debt to Petrus Christus, whose Death of the Virgin was the first painting to enter the Putnam Foundation collection when it was established 60 years ago.
