Speaker: Jim Grebl, Manager of Docent Programs, Curatorial Affairs and Education, San Diego Museum of Art

Lecture: “The Romance of Ruins: American Painters and the Italian Landscape”

About the Lecture: The ancient Greek and Roman ruins that dot the Italian landscape from the Roman Campagna to Paestum and Sicily provided an irresistible lure for many American painters throughout the nineteenth century.  Artists such as Washington Allston, Thomas Cole, George Inness, Frederick Edwin Church, Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran and countless others took inspiration from the tangible echoes of the Classical past to create romantic evocations of a vanished civilization.

About the Speaker: Dr. Grebl has been with the San Diego Museum of Art since 1998, first as manager of the Museum’s archives and library, then as Associate Curator of Archives, Research and Provenance, and since October 2015 as Manager of Docent Programs. During his tenure, he has curated several exhibitions, conducted research and given lectures on the institutional history of the Museum. Prior to joining the Museum, he taught the History of Art and Architecture at San Diego State University and several local community colleges.
