Speaker: Michael Brown, Associate Curator of European Art, San Diego Museum of Art

Lecture: "Goya: Genius Eyewitness"

Throughout his career, Francisco Goya y Lucientes (1746 – 1828) demonstrated a keen eye for historical detail, not merely as a passive onlooker, but also as a critical and satirical commentator. His graphic work is often annotated with text as witty and economical as the images themselves. In many ways, Goya’s life paralleled the tumultuous state of a world on the precipice of modernity; Goya was never afraid to look. Consequently, his observations are as relevant today as they were in his day.

Location: Timken Museum of Art • Balboa Park, 1500 El Prado San Diego
