Lecture and Reception

Gainsborough’s Cottage Doors: A Lifelong Reflection

Speaker: Hugh Belsey, Senior Research Fellow, The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, London.

Join us for a lecture on the great 18th century artist Thomas Gainsborough and his evocative “Cottage Door” landscapes. Over the last 20 years of his life, Gainsborough created nostalgic scenes of the rural poor and the subtle variations in each painting reflect the artist’s own changing mood and outlook. They demonstrate a personal longing for an uncomplicated family life outside of the artist’s more well known portrait practice.

Lecturer Hugh Belsey, is a senior research fellow at Yale University’s Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art in London. He is an eminent scholar on Gainsborough and the author of the artist’s forthcoming catalogue raisonné. For twenty-three years he was curator of Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury, East Anglia, and was honored as a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2004.
