Study Day L.A.: LACMA

Caravaggio, Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness, 1604-1605, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, William Rockhill Nelson Trust

Join Timken Director John Wilson and fellow art enthusiasts for a special Saturday at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art where we will be treated to curator-‐guided tours of the exhibitions Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy and Daily Pleasures: French Ceramics from the MaryLou Boone Collection.

Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy introduces the work of Caravaggio, one of the most compelling artists of the past, today rivaling in fame both Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Caravaggio's life story is now legendary, and his traits of personality, including passion and brutality, are echoed in his dramatic oeuvre. Bodies and Shadows traces the evolution of the master’s style and the exhibition includes eight masterpieces by Caravaggio alongside works by other artists from Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands who carried into the late 17th century the strangeness, beauty and raw emotion of his work.

Daily Pleasures: French Ceramics from the MaryLou Boone Collection features more than 130 pieces of French faience and soft-‐paste porcelain from the outstanding private collection of MaryLou Boone, now given to LACMA and the Huntington Library. Originally made to emulate Asian hard-‐paste porcelain imported into Europe, faience and soft-‐paste porcelain ultimately became distinctive and sought-‐after ceramics in their own right. With examples from the foremost manufactories of the 17th and 18th centuries, these delicate pieces chronicle advances in technology, reflect the rhythms and rituals of daily domestic life, and provide a unique view of French customs and culture.
