Study Day L.A.: The Bowers Museum and Irvine Museum

April 25, Thursday

Join Timken Director John Wilson and fellow art enthusiasts for an exciting study day to Orange County to see two extraordinary museums and two unique exhibitions.

Our first stop will the The Bowers Museum and a private tour of the world premier exhibition Gems of the Medici, showcasing some of the oldest and most unique pieces of the Medici gem collection in Florence. The exhibition includes antiquities from the 1st century BC as well as a cornelian which was a part of the Seal of Nero. We'll also have time in the Bowers' remarkable collection of more than 120,000 works of art representing many cultures of the world.

After our morning at the Bowers, we will travel south to The Irvine Museum stopping first for lunch at the acclaimed Bistango Restaurant.

The Irvine Museum is dedicated to the preservation and display of California art of the Impressionist Period (1890-1930). The museum celebrates its twentieth anniversary in the 2013 with the exhibition Lasting Impressions: Twenty Years of The Irvine Museum. As a special treat, founding director Jean Stern, one of the foremost authorities on southern California plein air impressionism, will give us a private tour of the exhibition and museum.
