programs that help you incorporate the study of
art into your classroom:
Teacher Guide to the Collection in English and Spanish
The Teacher Guide contains a number of ideas and lesson plans to help you prepare your students for their visit to the Timken. The guide includes information about ten works in the Museum’s collection that represent painting from the fourteenth century in Italy to the nineteenth century in the
United States. The Teacher's Guide introduces questions
and activities for students and offers teaching ideas.

Teacher Workshops
Learn about the Timken and the many ways art can connect to your teaching. Led by the Education Department staff, Teacher Workshops are designed to acquaint K-12 teachers with the Museum’s resources. Collaborative Arts Resources for Education (CARE)
Collaborative Arts Resources for Education (CARE) is an arts
education initiative offered by four San Diego arts organizations:
the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA), Mingei International
Museum, La Jolla Playhouse and the Timken Museum of Art. An arts-based education program for Title I elementary schools, CARE includes an artist-in-residence program in elementary classrooms, teacher in-service workshops, and a website. Summer Teacher Institute
Join CARE Partners La Jolla Playhouse, the Mingei International 
Museum, the Museum of Photographic Arts, and the Timken
Museum of Art for this weeklong institute for teachers in grades
3—6. Funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, this year’s
institute is based on the Common Core standards for literacy and
will provide strategies for integrating the various arts disciplines of
the CARE partners. No prior experience in the arts needed!
Each day, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 3:00 p.m., will be hosted by a different CARE partner and will include special behind-the-scenes access. The institute will focus on the reading, writing, and listening/speaking strands the Common Core standards. Applications to attend and receive a stipend are due on June 29.
We encourage you to apply in pairs with a colleague from your school site. Opportunities to participate in a textbook publication are available for those willing to commit throughout the 2012-1013 school year.

Sweetwater Arts Education Partnership
Attention Sweetwater teachers! In partnership with the Sweetwater Union High School
District (SUHSD), the Timken is offering free gallery tours including free round-trip
transportation for SUHSD students. Visual Art teachers from the district can reserve
their spot for the 2010-2011 school year by emailing tours@timkenmuseum.org or
calling (619) 239 5548 x102. Please make sure to tell us that you are part of the
Sweetwater Arts Education Partnership to ensure free round-trip transportation to Balboa Park. This offer is limited to one group from the district per month with a group size of 40–60 students requesting to come on a docent-led tour. Buses are offered on a first come, first served basis as funds are limited.
AERO San Diego
The Timken is a member of San Diego's Arts Education
Resource
Organization, AERO, a community of arts organizations that work
together to create a culture of arts education within county public
schools through networking, advocating, evaluating and supporting
high quality standards based programs.
AERO, supported by the San Diego County Office of Education, has issued its highest Seal of Approval to the Timken as all of the museum's school programs are standards-based. AERO's highest Seal of Approval is obtained at the end of each school year, once members have conducted a standards-based self-evaluation of their school programs. Click here for more information.
