From 1400 through 1700, tapestries were popular in the courts and churches of Europe. Medieval and Renaissance rulers and church leaders lavished vast sums of money on tapestries which were woven from the rich materials and minerals of the old and new world. Considered a principal part of the flamboyant magnificence expected of the period, tapestries were produced using high/low-warp looms with many weavers taking a considerable amount of time to create.
