HOW DID EUROPEAN COLONIALISM AND THE AGE OF SAIL INFLUENCED SEASCAPE ART?
Seascapes typically depict views at sea or views from the shore. The ocean, beaches, coastlines, ships at sea, and nautical images make up picturesque artworks. This presentation will explore some of the expansive views of the ocean in the Timken collection and shed light on how the rise of the Golden Age of Sail and the European colonial expansion of the 16th and 17th centuries led to the development of this art form.
