Join us for a deep dive into Kehinde Wiley's legacy!

Art in the Evening Lecture & Reception: Decolonizing Symbols of Power in the Art of Kehinde Wiley will feature guest speaker, Dr. Denise Rogers, professor of art history at San Diego Mesa College. During this evening event we will explore Kehinde Wiley's themes of identity, power, presentation, and the decolonization of art and symbols. Dr. Rogers will highlight the ways Wiley reimagines traditional art historical references with a focus on underrepresented communities, particularly people of color, to reshape and reflect a more inclusive and diverse perspective.

This lecture and evening reception takes place in conjunction with the Timken's presentation of Kehinde Wiley's Equestrian Portrait of Tommaso of Savoy-Carignan (2015), compellingly juxtaposed with Anthony van Dyck's Mary Villiers, Lady Herbert of Shurland (c.1636). These works, temporarily installed together in the Museum's Dutch & Flemish Gallery, are part of the Timken's ongoing series, Reconsidering... which places contemporary artworks in conversation with European paintings created before 1900. Kehinde Wiley's Equestrian Portrait of Tommaso of Savoy-Carignan (2015) is on loan from a private collection, and on public display through May 2024 in collaboration with the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art.

Lecture will be preceded by a wine and light hors d'oeuvre reception.
