Virtual Talk - Fashioned by Sargent

Image for Virtual Talk - Fashioned by Sargent

American artist John Singer Sargent is best known for his portraits of Gilded Age robber barons and society ladies. He lived and worked in Paris and London, making several trips to Boston and New York for American commissions. Sargent created portraits that brought his subjects to life, but he did much more than simply record what appeared before him. He often chose what his sitters wore and, even if they arrived in his studio dressed in the latest fashions, he frequently simplified and altered the details. Exploiting dress was an integral part of his artistry. In today’s talk, we’ll explore Sargent’s power over his sitters’ images by considering the liberties he took with sartorial choices to express their distinctive personalities, social positions, professions, gender identities, and nationalities. Join us as we delve into the lives of the ‘rich and famous’ at the turn of the 20th century. You won’t want to miss hearing about how Sargent responded to the furor that accompanied his famous portrait of ‘Madame X.’
