Virtual Talk - Paintings & Poetry, Inspiring Each Other Across Centuries

Image for Virtual Talk - Paintings & Poetry, Inspiring Each Other Across Centuries

Leonardo de Vinci once said, “Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.” Over the centuries, poets have inspired visual artists to create imagery displaying emotion and summarizing the stories told in their poetry. Conversely, painters display emotion, political comment and humanity, which capture the imagination of the poet and are translated to the written word. Transformative collaborations, including Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Edmund Spencer in the 16th century to Albert Bierstadt and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in the 19th century will be examined in this docent-led talk.
