Free Virtual Talk - Rembrandt and his Colleagues

Image for Free Virtual Talk - Rembrandt and his Colleagues

During the 17th century, the Netherlands ranked among the most powerful and influential countries in Europe and the world, erupting with artists of great skill and inventiveness. Their contributions were so profound, the artists continue to enthrall us to this day. The Timken collection contains Dutch and Flemish masterpieces from this century and from some of the world’s most renowned artists, including Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Anthony van Dyck. This docent-led talk will examine the new genres of art introduced during this century along with the shift in patronage. For example, collecting was no longer relegated to the wealthy and powerful. The general public became avid consumers of art. Art for the first time became available in the open marketplace and there were plenty of buyers for the new landscapes, still life, portraits, and genre scenes of their everyday lives.
