The German Renaissance, which was part of the Northern Renaissance, was an artistic and cultural advancement that spread among German intellectuals during the 15th- and 16th centuries. German humanism spread at this time in the various German states and principalities. Importantly, Germany produced two crucial developments that were dominant in the 16th century all over Europe: moveable type and the Protestant Reformation. Perhaps the most influential artist of the 16th century was Albrecht Dürer who was known for his printmaking and engraving along with exquisite paintings. The artist Lucas Cranach the Elder was employed as the court painter to the Electors of Saxony. Their acclaimed artwork along with the career of Hans Holbein the Elder, also a masterful portrait painter, will be discussed in this docent-led talk along with some of the artists of the Cologne and Danube Schools.
