Art in the Evening: The Moods of Early Russian Art

Join us for a special Art in the Evening program featuring Justin Willson, Curator at The Icon Museum and Study Center in Clinton, Massachusetts, as he illuminates one of the most transformative periods in Russian icon painting. Drawing upon exceptional works in the Timken collection, Willson will trace developments in style and patronage across fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Muscovy, beginning with painters in the circle of Dionisiy and revealing how a sweeping religious revival reshaped the artistic and spiritual character of early Russian art.

Set against the intimate backdrop of the Museum’s galleries, the evening offers a rare opportunity to experience the Timken’s distinguished collection of Russian icons through the perspective of a leading scholar in the field. Guests are invited to enjoy wine and curated nibbles before the lecture, followed by an engaging conversation that brings new insight to works whose beauty and spiritual resonance have endured for centuries.

The lecture coincides with the release of Wilson’s book, The Moods of Early Russian Art (University of Chicago Press, 2026). Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.
