The Timken Museum is home to one of the finest collection of icons in North America. Highlighting several of the rarest examples of Russian icons, this lecture traces developments in style and patronage over the fifteenth and sixteenth century in Muscovy. Beginning with painters in the circle of Dionisiy, the talk examines how a religious revival prompted a dramatic change in early Russian art, whose ramifications are still felt today.

The lecture coincides with the release of the speaker’s book, The Moods of Early Russian Art (University of Chicago Press, 2026), which covers the same period of icon painting.
