Post-Impressionism was primarily a French art movement that emerged roughly between 1886-1905. This corresponded with the last Impressionist exhibition and the birth of Fauvism. Post-Impressionism developed as a reaction to the Impressionists' focus on the naturalistic depiction of color and light. George Seurat for example adopted the color theorists' idea that a painter could utilize color to create harmony and emotion just as a musician might employ counterpoint and variation to reveal harmony in music. Paul Gauguin however concentrated on lush Symbolism. Regardless of the artist, Post-Impressionists were very intent on portraying the subjective vision of each artist. The movement therefore brought in an era of painting which transcended its traditional focus on being a window to the world, and instead became a window to the soul and mind of each individual artist.
