Artists paint portraits of married couples for all sorts of reasons: Most often they are commissioned by the respective couple who is seeking to capture their appearance for future generations. Perhaps, it’s one spouse who wants the pleasure of seeing himself or herself alongside their partner or the couple intends to ‘show off’ their wealth and status. It could even be that the artist is interested in presenting an interpretation of a married couple. Whatever the reason, these pairs of portraits give us a window into the social and cultural environment in which they were created. In this docent-led talk, we’ll get to know various couples through history who have been immortalized through their portraits.
