Free Virtual Talk: Rembrandt's St. Bartholomew(s)

Image for Free Virtual Talk: Rembrandt's St. Bartholomew(s)

Two paintings of St. Bartholomew by Rembrandt can be seen in southern California: one at the Timken and one at the Getty. A third, much earlier rendition of the saint, now attributed only to Rembrandt’s studio, belongs to the Worcester Art Museum. It has had the colorful history of being stolen and then found. What can be said about Rembrandt’s interest in this man, comparatively little known among Christ’s Apostles, except for the manner of his death: being skinned alive?

Speaker: Dr. Florence Gillman, Timken Docent and USD Professor of
Biblical Studies
