During the first part of the seventeenth century, the city of Haarlem maintained the lead in the development of the graphic arts and painting in Holland. By 1625 the situation changed, and Amsterdam took over as the art center of the Netherlands. Harlem, however, had many stellar artists who continued to paint and thrive in its rich environment. For this reason, the smaller city maintained its high status in the fields of landscape painting, portraiture, and still life. Supremely talented artists such as Frans Hals, Pieter Claesz, Judith Leyster, Jacob van Ruisdael, and others practiced their craft in Haarlem. The focus of this  docent-led talk will be to document these individuals, and the art of other key painters, and to reveal how they contributed to the artistic success of Holland during the Baroque.
