The death of the martyr St. Catherine of Alexandria by order of a Roman emperor did not go as planned. The wheels of the mechanism designed to kill her didn't work. But, they are immortalized in some of the many paintings of her, a few of which can be seen in the Timken collection. What made this Egyptian woman such a popular figure among artists?
