Free Virtual Talk: Variations on a Theme

Image for Free Virtual Talk: Variations on a Theme

There are certain ‘stories’ or subject matter that are repeatedly chosen by artists as inspiration for their work. Undoubtedly, we all think of the Christian story of the Annunciation, depicted by so many great artists over time. In comparing paintings of the same subject, we might say that we are in a position to better ponder more of the individual, or ‘artistic’ aspect of an artwork, as divorced from any complications of subject matter, allowing for a more distilled look at what makes an artwork unique. In this docent-led talk we’ll consider how artists, depicting the same subject matter, create works reflecting on the idea that it’s not the subject matter, but how an artist paints it that makes a work great. As such, we’ll eliminate subject matter as a point of distinction and comparison and focus on how the artist otherwise makes a work inspiring.
