Virtual ARTSReach Lecture: German Expressionism - Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter

At the start of the twentieth century, progressive German artists focused on Paris for new ideas. Concerned with the political and cultural events in their own country, artists of the Brücke (Bridge) group sought to create a truly innovative German avant-garde first in Dresden and then in Berlin. By 1911, another important fraction of artists emerged in Munich known as Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) and was led by Franz Marc and Wassily Kandinsky. The art produced within these two prominent German movements will be the topic of this lecture.
