While Italy was experiencing the revival of classical antiquity and the rise of humanism in the 15th century, Northern Europe similarly saw a flourishing of artistic innovation and production. Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden emerged as the most renowned painters in Europe, gaining legendary status for perfecting the technique of oil painting and their almost superhuman ability to capture minute details. Works by these masters were highly sought after by princes and merchants across Europe, prized for their remarkable verisimilitude, technical virtuosity, and expressive power. In this docent-led virtual talk, we’ll explore how Netherlandish artists achieved their shared goal: to make the painted image come vividly to life and render the unseen palpable.
