Virtual Talk - Gauguin: From Stockbroker to 'Savage'

Image for Virtual Talk - Gauguin: From Stockbroker to 'Savage'

Along with his contemporaries Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin was a pioneer of modernist art. His use of expressive color, flat planes, and simplified, sometimes distorted forms exerted a profound influence on avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century, from Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso to the German Expressionists.

Gauguin began his career working on the Paris stock exchange, painting in his spare time and initially exhibiting with the Impressionists. His lifelong desire to travel—shaped in part by having grown up in Lima, Peru—soon took him to places around the world, ultimately leading him to Tahiti. There, his work was deeply influenced by non-Western peoples and cultures, which informed many of his best-known paintings.
