In an age when our phones, computers, and online platforms keep us connected to friends and loved ones, it's worth reflecting on a time not so long ago when people had to rely on portraits to bring the 'absent' into the present. This is one reason why Holbein remains so significant today. His celebrity portraits—of King Henry VIII, Sir Thomas More, Thomas Cromwell, and others—have become the defining images of these men, cementing their likenesses in the public imagination. When we think of Thomas More, it’s Holbein’s portrayal that comes to mind. Holbein’s portraits not only captured accurate likenesses but also celebrated the individuals’ identities, values, aspirations, and achievements.
