Virtual Talk - Seventeenth Century Art in Holland

Image for Virtual Talk - Seventeenth Century Art in Holland

During the 17th century, the Dutch Republic was the most prosperous nation in Europe. Art, military strength, science, and trade were at its peak. At this time, a break from monarchist and Catholic cultural traditions during the Protestant Reformation allowed for the decline in focus on religious paintings. In addition, a burgeoning middle class sought out new genres of art which helped to enhance their homes. These artworks also reflected their tastes and interests. Cityscapes, landscapes, portraiture, and still life painting grew ever more popular. Many of the most beloved artists of the 1600s also came from this region.  This docent-led virtual talk on the Dutch Baroque will highlight great artists such as Pieter Claesz, Frans Hals, Rembrandt, Jacob Van Ruisdael, and Johannes Vermeer.
