Virtual Talk - The Early Renaissance in Siena

Image for Virtual Talk - The Early Renaissance in Siena

Siena was a cultural, economic, and political center in Tuscany during the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, home to a distinguished school of painting led by artists such as Duccio, Simone Martini, and the Lorenzetti brothers. Influenced by the city’s political ties, Siena's art featured a Gothic architectural style and a more decorative painting tradition, marked by vibrant colors and elongated, courtly figures. Artists also created revered religious imagery, particularly of the Virgin Mary, Siena’s patron saint. However, the plague of 1348 devastated the city, wiping out 30-50% of its population. While Florence and Milan recovered, Siena, once a thriving metropolis, never fully bounced back. By the late 15th century, the city’s art had been overtaken by the Florentine style. This docent-led virtual talk will examine the rise and fall of Siena's artistic legacy.
