The German Renaissance, part of the broader Northern Renaissance, was an artistic and cultural movement that flourished among German intellectuals during the 15th and 16th centuries. German humanism spread across the various German states and principalities, and during this time, Germany became the birthplace of two major developments that shaped Europe: movable type printing and the Protestant Reformation. One of the most influential artists of the 16th century, Albrecht Dürer, was renowned for his printmaking, engraving, and masterful paintings. Another key figure, Lucas Cranach the Elder, served as the court painter to the Electors of Saxony. This docent-led virtual talk will focus on Dürer, Cranach, and other notable artists from the Cologne and Danube Schools.
