Virtual Talk - The Pre-Raphaelites

Image for Virtual Talk - The Pre-Raphaelites

The Pre-Raphaelite movement was influenced by the ideas of the brilliant polymath John Ruskin, who lived during the Victorian era. Ruskin strongly encouraged artists to “go to nature” and approach their subjects with heightened realism. The themes these artists embraced were largely drawn from British literature and poetry, often centered around love and death. The artists formed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood around 1848, with three founding members—Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, and John Everett Millais—who were all students at the Royal Academy. They focused on art created before the time of the great Renaissance master Raphael, adopting an anti-establishment ideology and a revival of medieval styles. This docent-led virtual talk will explore these artists and other members of their group in more detail.
