The Venetian Renaissance was a time of artistic growth in Venice, Italy. It began in the late 1400s and lasted until about 1580. The Venetian School had a unique style that was influenced by the city's remarkable location, and the number of wealthy patrons who populated this magnificent city. Venetian artists included beautiful light and color in their paintings. While Venice was the focus of artistic development, other smaller cities such as Padua, Brescia, and Verona, also contributed to the greatness of the Venetian School. Some of the artists who became major forces in European art from this region were Giovanni Bellini, his brother Gentile Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, and Paolo Veronese. These painters utilized a freer brushstroke, rough weave canvas, harmonious colors, oily pigments, and rich modeling and shading. Their work and the paintings of other significant Venetian artists will be discussed in this docent-led virtual talk.
