Virtual Talk - When Dancing Led to Beheading

Image for Virtual Talk - When Dancing Led to Beheading

Salome was the Herodian princess whose innocent dance and collaboration with her angry, revengeful mother, Herodias, led to the beheading of John the Baptist. Salome has been immortalized in art, literature and opera. Over the centuries, her story has taken on a life of its own, shaping her into a symbol of seduction and intrigue. But what was the historical Salome truly like, beyond the dramatic portrayals we will survey? To find out, join us for this virtual talk by Timken docent, Dr. Florence Gillman (Professor Emerita of Biblical Studies, University of San Diego), and author of a study of this famously murderous mother-daughter team, Herodias: At Home in That Fox's Den (Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, 2003).
