Raphael, Prince of Painters

For centuries the prolific painter Raphael has dominated the world with his academic tradition of European painting. His works of art are known to be legendary, rare and revel the greats such as Leonardo and Michelangelo. The Timken Museum of Art is fortunate enough to have on loan from the National Gallery in London, the original Raphael, The Madonna of the Pinks, on exhibition from December 19, 2014 through April 26, 2015.

The masterpiece by Raphael, The Madonna of the Pinks though diminutive in size at 11 by 9 inches, stands out amongst his works as being of his greatest accomplishments. There followed more elaborate and perhaps even more sophisticated Virgin and Child paintings, but none matched the outburst of joy that illuminates The Madonna of the Pinks. It is said that The Madonna of the Pinks is to Raphael as the Mona Lisa is to Leonardo.

Entrance to the museum and the exhibition is FREE. Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10:30am-4:30pm, Sunday 12:30pm-4:30pm, closed Mondays and holidays. December 19, 2014 - April 26, 2015
